Sacramento, CA — A boy in Sacramento died after he was beaten with a hammer while defending his younger sister against his mother’s ex-boyfriend who attempted to sexually assault her, according to KTXL.
The boy, Dante Daniels, died six days after he was viciously attacked with a hammer on Sept. 1.
A criminal complaint states Deandre Chaney Jr., 23, was performing a criminal lewd act on Dante’s sister, 7, when the child decided to intervene.
“This guy beat my grandson with a hammer. Down to his spine. They couldn’t save his brain,” Dante’s grandmother Monique Brown told KTXL.
Chaney was apprehended in Nevada on Sept. 2. Police said he covered himself in a tarp and hid in a backyard shed, the Sacramento Bee reports. He was taken into custody on an outstanding warrant.
Chaney is the former boyfriend of Dante’s mother, Elizabeth Salone, 28. At some point, detectives say Chaney took the hammer and knife and turned them on Salone and her 7-year-old daughter.
Salone suffered an eye injury during the incident and will “probably never see out of her left eye,” Brown said.
As for the 7-year-old girl, Brown says she “will need a lot of help.”
Doctors were able to save Dante’s heart and donated it to a 4-year-old child in California.
“Dante gave his heart to a 4-year-old in southern California,” Brown said. “So a 4-year-old lives on.”
Chaney entered a no contest plea to a charge of failing to register as a sex offender in October. Chaney likewise pleaded no contest to two separate battery charges he was accused of in 2011 and 2014.
